Since leaving Eureka we have had wonderful conditions. The ice conditions of Eureka Sound are totally different from those of Markham Fiord up north.

Some places the ice is like this.

But when the ice is like the one shown in the picture, it is also a witness to the fact that there is not much wind in the area. So far we have had effectively one hour ski sailing; we did then about 10 kilometers. So when the conditions are right we can go really fast!

But for now, we have to go on foot...

It is a lot lighter "down" here and the days are a lot longer. We can really feel the heat of the sun during the daytime. This of cause affects us in a positive way. Every morning when we wake up, there is the light from the sun shining on our tent. As long as it's not cloudy or windy, the daytime temperature can be quite comfortable.

There are a lot of icebergs in Eureka Sound, broken from some of the glaciers in the area and drifting around until they are melted...

Stor Island is an island in the Sound. "Stor" in Norwegian can be translated to "big" in English. This together with a lot of other names on the map tells that there have been many Norwegians who visited this area and marked the "white spots of the map".
