April 6, 2004

Since this morning, the weather hasn't been so good. Both of us had a headache, probably due to yesterday's sudden elevation to an altitude of 2,000 meters. But when I woke up this morning it was all gone. We had breakfast, took down the tent, and started for the day around 10:00 a.m. With no visibility at all in whiteout, we attached seals (for grip on the snow) onto the skis, dragged the sleds, and moved forward. But the sleds, weighing 100 kilograms each, sank into the soft snow, and so we couldn't cover much ground. We repeated the stop-and-go every 60 to 80 steps we moved.

Around 4:00 p.m. the wind began to blow, so we tried using the skisails. But visibility was still too low. I couldn't recognize anything 10 meters away. We used skisails of 24 square meters and slowly proceeded. However it was too difficult for me to control the skisail in this kind of weather condition. In the end, we only covered 5 kilometers today (2 kilometers by walking, 3 kilometers by skisailing).
