Aerosol Sampling

Weather: fine
Temperature: -8.8 degrees Celsius (5:35 am)
Wind direction: south east
Wind speed: 6.3m/s
Barometer: 797hPa

Today I would like to introduce you to Aerosol sampling. We will be taking samples of the air, but it is not a matter of putting Greenland's air into plastic bags and taking it back with us. In the actual sampling, a pump is used to take in the air particles onto a special mesh material, and bring back this mesh containing the particles to the laboratory for analysis.

The size of the particle samples is about 0.1 to 10pm (1/10000~1/100mm). For the analysis, an electron microscope and an X-ray will be used to reveal the size and composition of the particles.

The aim of the aerosol sampling is to research the extent of air pollution in Greenland as well as how much influence the "yellow dust" from China has on Greenland's enviroment.
