Pemmican

For this expedition, we are carrying a principal food called pemmican which was developed by Ms. Hiroko Araki of Seitoku Junior College of Nutrition in Japan. For breakfast and supper we eat it by mixing with hot water. The pemmican is made of various kinds of dried vegetables and beef. For lunch we have another pemmican that can be taken easily during daytime activities. And this is chocolate-based and is made of chocolate, pine nuts, sesame seeds, raisins, and oil. The pemmican has a high calorie content in order for us to warm up our bodies. Food is fundamental to warming the body in this arctic environment.

Stepan and Håvard also carry oatmeal as they have wheat in their daily life. Stepan eats lightly and seems not taking much water. Ms. Araki says he needs to drink more especially because the pemmican contains a lot of oil. Håvard says it is better to have a different diet for breakfast, which I agree and I am thinking to do so next time.
